Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create and understand a timeline that spans from geologic to modern history.

Materials and Prep

  • Blank paper
  • Pencil or pen
  • Ruler

Prior knowledge of basic historical events and time periods would be helpful.

Activities

  1. Create a Geologic History Timeline:
  2. Start by researching and understanding the major geologic eras and periods. Then, using your blank paper and ruler, draw a horizontal line across the page to represent the timeline. Label the beginning of the timeline as "4.6 billion years ago" and the end as "Present." Use your research to add important geologic events and eras along the timeline, such as the formation of the Earth, the extinction of dinosaurs, and the appearance of early humans.

  3. Add Major Historical Events:
  4. Now it's time to add major historical events to your timeline. Research and choose significant events from different time periods, such as ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and modern history. Label these events with their corresponding dates and place them on your timeline accordingly.

  5. Personalize Your Timeline:
  6. Make your timeline unique by adding illustrations or symbols to represent each event. You can also color-code different time periods or use different shapes for different types of events. Get creative and have fun!
