Design a Dream Theme Park: Math in the Real World

Introduction: The Challenge

Imagine that you have been hired to design a brand-new theme park. You have a piece of land, a limited budget, and many exciting ideas. Your job is to create a park that is fun, organized, and affordable.

Hook question: If you could build one attraction in your dream theme park, what would it be? What would people do there?

Tell the learner: “Today you will use math like a real designer. You will measure spaces, plan a map, manage money, and explain your decisions.”

Part 1: I Do — Modeling the Math

Mini-Lesson: Finding Area

Explain that area tells how much space a flat surface covers. For a rectangle:

Area = length × width

Model an example:

A snack shop is 6 units long and 4 units wide.

6 × 4 = 24 square units

Explain that “square units” might mean square feet, square meters, or simply squares on graph paper.

Mini-Lesson: Managing a Budget

Model a simple budget:

Add the costs: $350 + $150 + $200 = $700.

Subtract from the total budget: $1,000 − $700 = $300 remaining.

Part 2: We Do — Plan Together

Step 1: Choose the Park’s Theme

Invite the learner to choose one theme:

  • Space adventure
  • Jungle exploration
  • Underwater world
  • Fairy-tale kingdom
  • Invent a different theme

Step 2: Create a Shared Budget

Use the following sample costs, or invent reasonable costs together:

The learner chooses features while keeping the total at or below $1,000. Use coins, play money, or written calculations to make the budgeting hands-on.

Think-pair-share variation: The learner first decides independently, explains the choices aloud to a parent or partner, and then revises the plan if needed.

Step 3: Practice Area Together

Choose three park features and calculate their areas together.

Formative check: Ask the learner to explain why the area is measured in square units and not just units.

Part 3: You Do — Create the Theme Park

Instructions

  1. Give the park a creative name.
  2. Choose a theme.
  3. Select attractions and features without spending more than $1,000.
  4. Draw the park on paper or graph paper.
  5. Use rectangles or other simple shapes for the park areas.
  6. Label each feature.
  7. Write the length, width, and area of at least three rectangular spaces.
  8. Add paths, entrances, signs, trees, benches, or other details.
  9. Create a map key, such as a star for rides or a fork-and-knife symbol for food.
  10. Write three to five sentences explaining the design.

  • A colorful paper map
  • A three-dimensional model using recycled materials
  • A digital drawing or slide presentation
  • An oral presentation using the completed planning sheet

Theme park designers, architects, engineers, and business owners use the same skills when planning real spaces. They calculate how much room is available, decide how to spend money, make maps, and consider how people will move safely through an area.
