Introduction: The Flower Mystery

Hook: Ask: “How can a tiny bee help produce apples, pumpkins, strawberries, and many other foods?”

Show a flower, flower picture, or short video clip of a bee visiting a flower. Invite the learner to make a prediction:

“What do you think happens when a bee lands on a flower?”

Explain that today the learner will become a pollination detective. They will investigate how bees help plants make seeds and fruit.

Use a spoon or clothespin as the “bee.” Follow these steps together:

  1. Move the bee to Flower A.
  2. Pick up some pretend pollen with the spoon or clothespin.
  3. Move the bee to Flower B.
  4. Drop some pollen onto Flower B.
  5. Explain what happened using the word pollination.

Repeat the activity several times. Each time, change one detail:

  • Use a different tool as the bee.
  • Make the flowers different colors.
  • Have the bee visit three flowers in a row.
  • Try moving pollen without touching the flower and discuss why it is difficult.

Think-Pair-Share or Talk-It-Out

If learning independently, the learner may think aloud or explain the answer to a stuffed animal. If learning with others, discuss:
