Materials Needed

Introduction: The Number Detective Mission
Tell the learner:
“Today you are a number detective! Your mission is to discover how many objects are in each group, compare groups, and find secret ways to build numbers.”
Place 8 objects in front of the learner. Ask:
- “How many objects do you think there are?”
- “How could we check?”
- “What number card matches this group?”
Explain that good mathematicians count carefully by touching or moving each object once.
Body: Teach and Practice
Part 1: I Do — Modeling Careful Counting
Place 12 objects in a row. Slowly touch each object while counting aloud:
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12.”
Think aloud:
“I touched each object once, so the last number I said tells me how many objects there are altogether. There are 12 objects.”
Place the objects in a different arrangement and ask whether the number changed. Count again together and explain that the objects can be arranged differently, but the total stays the same.
Quick Check
Show a group of 6 objects and ask:
- “How many objects are there?”
- “Which number card matches?”
- “How do you know?”
Part 2: We Do — Number Detective Sort
Work together to complete the following steps:
- Choose a number card from 0–20.
- Build that number using small objects.
- Count the objects aloud.
- Place the number card next to the group.
- Check the answer together.
Repeat with three or four different number cards. Invite the learner to choose some of the numbers.
Compare Two Groups
Place 5 objects on one plate and 8 objects on the other plate. Ask:
- “Which plate has more?”
- “Which plate has fewer?”
- “How can we prove it?”
Line up the objects so the learner can compare them one-to-one. Introduce the words:
- Greater than: a group has more.
- Less than: a group has fewer.
- Equal to: two groups have the same amount.
Practice with several pairs, such as:
- 3 and 7
- 9 and 4
- 6 and 6
- 10 and 8
Think-Pair-Share Alternative
If another person is available, each person builds a group of objects. Take turns explaining which group has more, fewer, or the same number. If working independently, the learner can explain the answer aloud to a stuffed animal or draw both groups on paper.
Part 3: You Do — Make a Number in Two Ways
Give the learner a target number from 2 to 10. Ask the learner to show two different ways to make it using two containers.
For example:
- 7 can be made with 3 and 4.
- 7 can also be made with 5 and 2.
- 7 can also be made with 6 and 1.
For each target number, the learner should:
- Choose a number.
- Place objects in the two containers.
- Count the objects in each container.
- Count all the objects to check the total.
- Draw or write the two parts.
Use the sentence frame:
“I made ___ with ___ and ___. ___ plus ___ equals ___.”
Fun Application: Plan a Toy-Shop Order
Invite the learner to pretend to run a toy shop. Give the following challenge:
“A customer wants 10 toys. You have two baskets. How many toys could go in each basket?”
Encourage the learner to find several solutions, such as:
- 1 and 9
- 2 and 8
- 3 and 7
- 4 and 6
- 5 and 5
Allow the learner to choose a different theme, such as snacks, pets, vehicles, or building blocks.
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, check understanding by asking:
- “How did you keep track while counting?”
- “How do you know this number matches the group?”
- “What could you do to compare these groups?”
- “Can you show the same number a different way?”
Watch for whether the learner:
- Counts each object only once.
