Sticker-by-Number Adventure

Materials Needed

  • A sticker-by-number page or simple homemade picture with numbered spaces
  • Numbered stickers that match the picture
  • Paper and crayons or colored pencils
  • A pencil or washable marker
  • A small tray or bowl for stickers
  • Optional: a timer, number cards, and a favorite small toy for the story

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the child will be able to:

  • Recognize and say numbers from 1 to 10.
  • Match a sticker to a space with the same number.
  • Follow picture directions in the correct order.
  • Use careful finger movements to peel and place stickers.
  • Talk about a finished picture using colors, shapes, and numbers.

Success Criteria

I can:

  • Find the number I need.
  • Place the matching sticker in the right spot.
  • Keep trying if a sticker does not fit right away.
  • Tell someone about my finished picture.

Lesson Length

Approximately 35–45 minutes. The activities may be shortened or spread across two days.

Introduction: The Sticker Mission

Hook

Show the sticker-by-number page and say:

“Oh no! This picture is missing its colors. Can you be a Sticker Detective and help finish it? Each sticker has a number clue!”

Talk Together

  • Ask, “What do you notice about this picture?”
  • Ask, “What numbers can you find?”
  • Point to two numbers and ask, “Which number is bigger?”
  • Invite the child to make the number shapes in the air with a finger.

Tell the child:

“Today we will look at numbers, match numbers, and carefully place stickers to make a picture.”

Body of the Lesson

Part 1: Number Warm-Up — I Do

Use the sticker sheet and the picture to model the process slowly.

  1. Choose one sticker, such as the sticker with the number 3.
  2. Say, “I see the number 3.”
  3. Search the picture for a space marked 3.
  4. Point to the matching space and say, “3 matches 3.”
  5. Peel the sticker carefully.
  6. Place it inside the matching space.

Think aloud:

“I will check before I stick. Does my sticker say 3? Does the space say 3? Yes! They match.”

Quick Check

Hold up two stickers. Ask, “Which sticker says 3?” Then ask the child to find a space with that number.

Part 2: Sticker Detectives — We Do

Work together on the next few stickers.

  1. Choose a sticker together.
  2. Have the child say the number.
  3. Search the picture together.
  4. Ask the child to point to the matching space.
  5. Help the child peel the sticker if needed.
  6. Let the child place the sticker.

Use simple questions:

  • “What number do we need?”
  • “Where do you see that number?”
  • “Do these numbers match?”
  • “What should we check before we stick?”

Think-Pair-Share Option

For a homeschool lesson, the child may “share” with a toy, puppet, or family member. The child chooses a sticker, tells the toy its number, and explains where it belongs.

Movement Break

Call out a number from 1 to 5. The child does that many actions:

  • Clap 3 times.
  • Tap knees 4 times.
  • Do 2 jumps.
  • March 5 steps.

Part 3: Finish the Picture — You Do

Invite the child to complete the rest of the picture independently.

Give these clear directions:

  1. Pick one sticker.
  2. Say its number.
  3. Find the same number on the picture.
  4. Check that the numbers match.
  5. Peel the sticker.
  6. Place it inside the matching space.
  7. Choose another sticker.

Encourage the child to choose the order. The child may begin with:

  • A favorite color
  • An easy number
  • The biggest sticker
  • A sticker that completes an important part of the picture

Use encouraging feedback:

  • “You checked the number before placing it.”
  • “You used careful fingers.”
  • “You kept trying when the sticker moved.”
  • “You found the matching space all by yourself.”

Part 4: Create a Number Sticker Picture

After finishing the activity, invite the child to make a small sticker-by-number picture.

  1. Draw a simple shape or picture, such as a flower, balloon, sun, or animal.
  2. Divide it into a few sections.
  3. Write numbers 1–5 in the sections.
  4. Place or draw matching numbers on stickers, or use stickers in different colors.
  5. Let the child decide which sticker belongs with each number.

Ask, “What should number 1 look like? What color should number 2 be?”

Formative Assessment

Observe the child during the lesson and note whether the child can:

  • Recognize numbers 1–10.
  • Match a sticker number to the same picture number.
  • Follow the sticker placement steps.
  • Peel and place stickers with growing control.
  • Explain how the child knows where a sticker belongs.

Quick Questions

  • “What number is on your sticker?”
  • “Can you find another number that matches it?”
  • “How many stickers have you placed?”
  • “Which number was easy to find?”

Summative Assessment: Show and Tell

When the picture is complete, ask the child to show it and answer three questions:

  1. “What is your picture?”
  2. “Can you point to three numbers you matched?”
  3. “Which sticker was your favorite, and why?”

The child demonstrates success by matching most stickers correctly, explaining the matching process, and sharing one detail about the completed picture.

Differentiation and Support

For a Child Who Needs More Support

  • Use only numbers 1–5.
  • Cover extra stickers so only two or three choices are visible.
  • Use large stickers and a picture with large spaces.
  • Say the number aloud while pointing to it.
  • Place a small matching number card beside the picture.
  • Let the child work on a few stickers at a time.
  • Help start the sticker peel, then let the child finish.

For a Child Ready for More Challenge

  • Use numbers up to 20.
  • Ask the child to put stickers in number order.
  • Ask the child to count how many stickers are used.
  • Invite the child to create a picture with a number key.
  • Ask questions such as, “How many stickers are left?”
  • Use simple addition: “You placed 2 blue stickers and 3 yellow stickers. How many altogether?”

Real-World Connection

Explain that people use matching clues in many places:

  • Matching a sock to its pair
  • Finding a house by its number
  • Putting toys in labeled bins
  • Following a recipe or building directions
  • Finding the right button on a device

Conclusion and Recap

Look at the finished picture together. Say:

“Today you looked at numbers, found matching numbers, and placed stickers carefully. You used your eyes, fingers, and thinking brain!”

Invite the child to complete these sentences:

  • “I matched number ___.”
  • “My picture is a ___.”
  • “The best part was ___.”
  • “Next time, I would like to make ___.”

Optional Exit Challenge

Show one sticker and ask the child to find or write the same number on a piece of paper. Celebrate the effort and display the finished picture.
