Hook
Imagine that you find a mysterious leaf on a hiking trail. You cannot ask the tree what it is called. How could you figure out its identity using only clues?
Today, you will become a leaf detective. You will study leaf features and use a special identification tool called a dichotomous key.

Explain that a dichotomous key works like a decision-making path. At every step, there are only two choices. The answer to one choice sends you to the next step. Eventually, you reach an identification.
Model Example
Suppose a leaf has a broad, flat blade and a smooth edge.
- Is the leaf broad and flat, or needle-like? Choose broad and flat.
- Is the leaf simple or made of several leaflets? Choose simple.
- Is the edge smooth or toothed? Choose smooth.
- The key identifies it as a smooth-edged simple leaf.
Emphasize that the key does not ask, “What color is the leaf?” unless color is useful and reliable. Good keys use features that are easy to observe and compare.
