Little Star Explorers: Build a Simple Planetarium

Materials Needed

  • A clean cardboard box or small paper bag
  • Flashlight
  • Black paper or dark crayons/paint
  • White paper
  • Child-safe scissors, used with adult help
  • Pencil or washable marker
  • Tape or glue
  • Optional: star stickers, cotton balls, toy planets, books about space

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the child will be able to:

  • Say that space is a big, dark place with stars and planets.
  • Explain that stars give off light and that we can see some stars from Earth.
  • Build and use a simple planetarium.

Introduction: Blast Off! (5–10 minutes)

Hook: Dim the room slightly and shine a flashlight on the ceiling. Ask:

  • “What do you see in the sky at night?”
  • “Have you ever seen a star?”
  • “Do stars look near or far away?”

Say:

“Today we are space explorers. We will build a tiny planetarium. A planetarium is a place where people look at pretend stars and learn about space.”

Explain in simple language:

  • “The Sun is a star.”
  • “Stars are very big, very hot balls of glowing gas.”
  • “Planets travel around stars. Earth is the planet where we live.”
  • “The Moon travels around Earth.”

Quick check: Ask the child to repeat: “Earth is a planet. The Sun is a star.”

Body: Build the Planetarium

Part 1: I Do—Adult Demonstration (5 minutes)

  1. Show the cardboard box or paper bag.
  2. Draw a few small dots and simple star shapes on one side.
  3. Explain: “These dots will become windows for our stars.”
  4. With adult help, carefully poke holes through the dots using a pencil. Keep the pencil pointed away from the child.
  5. Place the flashlight behind the holes and shine it toward a wall or ceiling.

Say:

“The flashlight is like a light from far away. The holes let the light through. Now our little stars can shine!”

Safety reminder: Never shine the flashlight into anyone’s eyes. An adult should handle any sharp tools and supervise scissors.

Part 2: We Do—Make Star Patterns Together (10 minutes)

Work together to make several star patterns. Let the child choose the shapes and names.

  1. Draw a small group of dots.
  2. Ask the child to connect the dots with a finger or washable marker.
  3. Give the pattern a fun name, such as “The Space Cat,” “The Rocket,” or “The Dancing Dinosaur.”
  4. Make another pattern shaped like a triangle, a zigzag, or a smile.
  5. Poke the holes with adult help.
  6. Test the pattern with the flashlight.

Think-pair-share option: In a classroom, children may quietly tell a partner the name of their star pattern. At home, the child may tell a stuffed animal, family member, or the adult.

Questions to ask:

  • “Which star pattern do you like best?”
  • “How many bright dots can you see?”
  • “What does your pattern look like?”
  • “Would the stars look different if we moved the flashlight?”

Part 3: You Do—Create Your Own Planetarium (10–15 minutes)

Invite the child to design a star picture.

  1. Choose a side of the box or a piece of dark paper.
  2. Draw stars, planets, or a Moon using dots and simple shapes.
  3. Choose a name for the sky picture.
  4. Ask an adult to help poke holes in the stars.
  5. Decorate the outside with stars, planets, or a rocket ship.
  6. Place the flashlight behind the design and project the stars onto a wall or ceiling.

Offer choices:

  • “Do you want to make a rocket pattern or an animal pattern?”
  • “Do you want white stars or colorful paper stars?”
  • “Would you like to tell a space story or draw a space picture?”

Space Explorer Movement Break (3–5 minutes)

Use movement to act out space words:

  • Star: Stretch arms wide and sparkle fingers.
  • Rocket: Crouch down, then slowly stand and say, “Blast off!”
  • Planet: Turn slowly in a circle.
  • Moon: Make a small circle with arms.

Formative Assessment: Check Along the Way

Notice whether the child can:

  • Identify a star, planet, and Moon when shown a picture or toy.
  • Explain that the flashlight helps the stars shine through the holes.
  • Follow the building steps with support.
  • Describe a star pattern using words such as “dots,” “bright,” “far,” or “night.”

Thumbs-up check: Say several statements and ask the child to show thumbs up if true:

  • “The Sun is a star.”
  • “Earth is a planet.”
  • “We should shine a flashlight into our eyes.”
  • “Stars can look like tiny dots in the night sky.”

Conclusion: Space Sharing Circle (5 minutes)

Turn on the planetarium one more time. Invite the child to describe the “sky.” Ask:

  • “What did we build?”
  • “How did the stars appear?”
  • “What is one thing you learned about stars?”
  • “What question do you still have about space?”

Recap together:

“Today we learned that stars shine in space. We built a planetarium with holes and a flashlight. We made star patterns and used our imaginations like space scientists.”

Summative Assessment: Show What You Know

Ask the child to complete these three tasks:

  1. Point to the star pattern they made.
  2. Show how to use the flashlight safely to project the stars.
  3. Tell or draw one fact about space.

Simple evaluation guide:

  • Meeting the goal: The child safely uses the planetarium, identifies stars or star patterns, and shares one space idea.

  • Make a constellation story with a beginning, middle, and end.
  • Count the stars in each pattern.
  • Compare what happens when the flashlight is near the box and farther away.
  • Build a second planetarium showing the Moon, planets, and stars.
