Learning the Number 5
Level: Age 5
Materials: Five small objects (such as blocks or buttons), paper, and a crayon or pencil.
Goal: Your child will recognize the numeral 5, count five objects, and try writing 5.
- Hook — 3 minutes: Hold up one hand and ask, “How many fingers do you see?” Count the fingers together, touching each one: “1, 2, 3, 4, 5!”
- Show it — 7 minutes: Put five objects in a row. Point to each as you count aloud. Show the numeral 5 on the paper and say, “This is the number five. It tells us there are five objects.” Trace a large 5 in the air while saying, “Across, down, and around.”
- Do it together — 8 minutes: Mix up the objects. Invite your child to move them into a new row, touching and counting each one. Ask, “How many are there?” Then draw a large 5 and invite your child to trace it with a finger. Say the number and trace together.
- Your child tries — 8 minutes: Ask your child to make a group of five objects without help, then count them aloud. Have them draw or trace a 5 on the paper. Celebrate the attempt; the numeral does not need to be perfect.
- Quick recap — 4 minutes: Ask, “What number did we learn? Can you show me five fingers? Can you count five objects?” Finish by counting the objects together once more.
Make it easier: Count the objects together slowly, moving each one aside as you count.
Make it harder: Hide one object from a group of five and ask, “How many are left?”
