Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the concepts of biology through a fun Lego challenge.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Pen and paper
- Access to Lego challenge cards (can be found online or created by the teacher)
No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Start by explaining to the student what biology is - the study of living organisms. Discuss different types of living organisms such as plants, animals, and humans.
-
Introduce the Lego challenge cards. These cards will have different biological concepts or scenarios that the student will have to build using Lego bricks.
-
Let the student choose a challenge card and encourage them to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to build a Lego model that represents the concept or scenario on the card.
-
Once the student has completed their Lego model, ask them to explain how their creation relates to the biological concept or scenario on the card.
-
Repeat steps 3 and 4 with different challenge cards, allowing the student to explore various biological concepts through Lego building.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "Biology is the study of living things. Can you name some living things you know?"
- "We can use Lego bricks to represent different living organisms and biological concepts. What do you think we can build to represent a plant?"
- "Creativity and problem-solving skills are important in biology. How can you use Lego bricks to show the life cycle of a butterfly?"
- "Can you explain how your Lego model represents the concept of adaptation in animals?"
- "What other biological concepts would you like to explore using Lego bricks?"
