Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and solve basic arithmetic problems involving addition and subtraction.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper or a notebook
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Addition with Objects
Gather some small objects like coins or buttons. Start with a small number, let's say 3. Place 3 objects in front of you. Now, ask a family member or friend to give you 2 more objects. Count all the objects together and write down the total number.
-
Activity 2: Subtraction with Fingers
Hold up both of your hands. Start with all your fingers up. Now, put down 4 fingers. How many fingers are still up? Write down the answer.
-
Activity 3: Addition and Subtraction Practice
Write down the following problems on your paper:
- 5 + 2 = ?
- 8 - 3 = ?
- 6 + 1 = ?
- 9 - 4 = ?
Try to solve each problem by counting objects or using your fingers. Write down the answers.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Addition is when we put two or more numbers together to find the total. For example, if we have 3 apples and 2 more apples, we can add them together to find out how many apples we have in total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away a number from another number. For example, if we have 8 candies and we eat 3 candies, we can subtract 3 from 8 to find out how many candies are left."
- "When we add or subtract, we can use objects or our fingers to help us count. This makes it easier to find the answer."
- "Let's practice addition and subtraction together. Remember to count carefully and write down your answers."
