Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts such as addition and subtraction.

Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Blank paper

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Addition Practice

Write down the following addition problems on your paper:

    • 2 + 3 =
    • 4 + 1 =
    • 5 + 2 =

Use your pencil to solve each problem by counting the numbers together. Write down the answers next to each problem.

  2. Activity 2: Subtraction Practice

Write down the following subtraction problems on your paper:

    • 6 - 2 =
    • 8 - 3 =
    • 9 - 4 =

Use your pencil to solve each problem by crossing out the number being subtracted. Write down the answers next to each problem.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "Addition is a way to combine two or more numbers together. For example, if you have 2 apples and 3 more apples, how many apples do you have in total?"
  • "Subtraction is a way to take away or find the difference between two numbers. For instance, if you have 6 cookies and you eat 2 of them, how many cookies will be left?"
  • "When we add numbers, we count them all together to find the sum. Can you count the numbers in the addition problems we solved earlier?"
  • "When we subtract numbers, we take away one number from another to find the difference. Can you show me how you crossed out the numbers in the subtraction problems we solved?"
