Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pen
  • Dungeons and Dragons rulebook (optional)

No prior knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce the concept of storytelling in Dungeons and Dragons. Discuss how the game involves creating characters, developing a plot, and making decisions that affect the outcome.

  2. Ask the student to imagine a scenario in a Dungeons and Dragons setting. Encourage them to think about the environment, the characters, and the potential conflicts. Have them write a short paragraph describing the scene.

  3. Next, have the student choose one of the characters from their scene and write a character profile. This should include details about the character's appearance, personality, and backstory.

  4. Now, instruct the student to write a short story or narrative using their scene and character profile. Encourage them to incorporate elements of storytelling such as setting, conflict, and resolution.

  5. Once the student has finished writing, have them read their story aloud or share it with a family member. Discuss the strengths of their narrative and offer constructive feedback for improvement.
