Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic concepts of Earth Science through fun Lego activities.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks (various sizes and colors)
- Printed pictures or diagrams of Earth's layers (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Build the Earth's Layers: Use Lego bricks to create a model of the Earth's layers. Start with the inner core, then add the outer core, mantle, and crust. Discuss the characteristics of each layer as you build.
- Create a Volcano: Build a Lego volcano using red and orange bricks. Discuss how volcanoes are formed and how they relate to Earth's layers. You can even make the volcano erupt using baking soda and vinegar!
- Construct a Water Cycle: Build a Lego representation of the water cycle. Use blue bricks to represent water, and create different scenes to depict evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Explain the importance of the water cycle for Earth's ecosystems.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "The Earth is made up of different layers, just like a Lego tower has different blocks stacked on top of each other."
- "The inner core is the hottest and solid part of the Earth, while the outer core is liquid and responsible for creating Earth's magnetic field."
- "The mantle is a thick layer of hot, semi-solid rock beneath the crust. It moves slowly and causes earthquakes and volcanic activity."
- "The crust is the thin outer layer of the Earth. It's where we live and where most of the land and water are located."
- "Volcanoes are formed when molten rock called magma rises to the surface through cracks in the Earth's crust. It can be very dangerous but also helps create new land."
- "The water cycle is how water moves around the Earth. It evaporates from bodies of water, forms clouds when it cools down, and then falls back to the ground as rain, snow, or hail."
- "The water cycle is essential for plants, animals, and humans to survive. It helps provide us with fresh water and keeps our planet healthy."
