Objective

By the end of this lesson, the second-grade homeschool student will be able to explore the world of scary movies from an artistic perspective, understand basic elements of visual arts, and develop an appreciation for different art forms.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Markers or crayons
  • Access to a computer or tablet for research

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student has some basic knowledge about different types of art and is familiar with using pencils and markers.

Activities

  1. Research and Discuss: Begin by researching famous scary movies together. Look for movie posters, still images, or clips that showcase the visual elements of these movies. Discuss what makes them scary and how the visuals contribute to the overall mood and atmosphere.

  2. Create a Movie Poster: Ask the student to choose their favorite scary movie or create their own imaginary one. Using the materials provided, have them design a movie poster that captures the essence of the movie. Encourage them to use colors, shapes, and images that convey a sense of fear or suspense.

  3. Present and Discuss: Once the movie posters are complete, have the student present their artwork to you or other family members. Ask them to explain the visual elements they incorporated and how they relate to the scary movie genre. Engage in a discussion about the different interpretations and reactions to their artwork.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Visual elements like colors, shapes, and images can help create a certain mood or atmosphere in a movie poster or artwork."
  • "Different people may have different interpretations of the same artwork. It's interesting to hear what others think and feel when they look at art."
