  • A book or article about surfing
  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper or a notebook

Prior knowledge of basic reading comprehension strategies, such as identifying main ideas, making connections, and asking questions, will be helpful for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Read and Discuss: Start by reading the selected text about surfing together. Encourage the student to ask questions and make connections to their own experiences or prior knowledge. Discuss any unfamiliar vocabulary words or concepts.
  2. Summarize the Story: Ask the student to write a brief summary of the story in their own words. Remind them to include the main idea and key details.
  3. Character Analysis: Choose a character from the story and ask the student to describe their traits, actions, and motivations. Encourage them to provide evidence from the text to support their analysis.
  4. Create a Surfing Guide: Have the student imagine they are writing a guidebook for beginner surfers. Ask them to list important tips, safety precautions, and equipment needed. They can also include personal recommendations based on the story they read.
  5. Surfing Vocabulary: Together, brainstorm a list of surfing-related vocabulary words. Have the student create flashcards with the word on one side and the definition on the other. They can practice matching the words and definitions or play a memory game.
