Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify different types of leaves.

Materials and Prep

  • A collection of various leaves
  • A magnifying glass (optional)
  • A notebook and pen/pencil
  • A computer or device with internet access (optional)

Activities

  1. Start by observing the leaves you have collected. Look at their shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns. Take notes on your observations.
  2. If you have a magnifying glass, use it to examine the leaves more closely. Notice any details like veins, textures, or hairs.
  3. Try to identify the leaves by using a field guide or by searching online. Pay attention to the leaf's characteristics and compare them to the information you find.
  4. Create a leaf identification chart in your notebook. Include columns for the leaf's name, shape, size, color, and any other distinguishing features you discovered.
  5. Take a nature walk and collect more leaves. Use your chart to identify them as you go along. Add any new findings to your chart.
