Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to spell and recognize key vocabulary words related to the book "Little House on the Prairie".

Materials and Prep

  • Copy of the book "Little House on the Prairie"
  • Paper and pencils
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard

Activities

  1. Word Hunt: Begin by reading a chapter from "Little House on the Prairie" together. As you read, ask your child to pay attention to any new or interesting words they come across. After reading, have them write down those words on a piece of paper. Then, together, look up the meanings of those words in a dictionary and discuss their spellings. Encourage your child to practice spelling and using these words in sentences.

  2. Word Scramble: Create a list of vocabulary words from the book, but scramble the letters of each word. Write the scrambled words on the whiteboard or chalkboard. Challenge your child to unscramble the words and write them correctly on their paper. Once they have unscrambled all the words, review the correct spellings together.

  3. Spelling Bee: Choose a few challenging words from the book and hold a mini spelling bee. Give your child a word, have them spell it aloud, and then check if they spelled it correctly. If they make a mistake, provide the correct spelling and encourage them to try again. Repeat this process with a few different words, reinforcing correct spelling along the way.
