Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts while engaging in a fun baking activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, etc.)
  • Baking utensils (whisk, spatula, etc.)
  • Oven
  • Apron (optional)

Prior knowledge required: Basic counting skills and recognition of numbers 1-10.

Activities

  1. Counting Ingredients:

Ask the student to count the number of cups or spoons needed for each ingredient while preparing the recipe. For example, if the recipe calls for 2 cups of flour, have the student count out 2 cups and add it to the mixing bowl.

  2. Measuring and Mixing:

Show the student how to use measuring cups and spoons to accurately measure the ingredients. Let them take turns measuring and adding the ingredients to the mixing bowl. Encourage them to mix the ingredients together using a whisk or spatula.

  3. Dividing the Recipe:

Explain to the student that sometimes we need to divide a recipe if we want to make less. Give them a simple example, like halving the recipe, and ask them to figure out the new measurements. For instance, if the original recipe calls for 2 cups of flour, ask them how much flour they would need if they only want to make half of the recipe.

  4. Counting Baking Time:

Once the ingredients are mixed, explain that we need to bake the batter in the oven for a certain amount of time. Ask the student to count down from the baking time and let them know when it's time to take the baked goods out of the oven.

Preschool Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn about numbers and how they can help us in baking!"
  • "We need to count the cups and spoons to make sure we add the right amount of ingredients."
  • "Let's use these special cups and spoons to measure the ingredients. We need to be careful and accurate."
  • "Sometimes, we can make less of a recipe. We just need to divide the measurements."
  • "We have to put our batter in the oven and wait for it to bake. We will count down the minutes!"
