Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a hay maze using only hay bales, and understand the basic concept of mazes.
Materials and Prep
- Hay bales
- Open space (backyard or indoor area)
- Optional: Rope or string
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear area where you can set up the hay maze. If you're doing it indoors, ensure there is enough space for the maze to fit comfortably.
Activities
- Discuss what a maze is and show examples (books, pictures, online images).
- Set up the hay maze by arranging the hay bales in a way that creates a path with dead ends and twists.
- Invite the student to navigate through the maze, starting at the entrance and trying to find the exit.
- Encourage the student to think strategically and problem solve as they navigate through the maze.
- Optional: Use rope or string to create additional obstacles or paths within the maze.
- Challenge the student to find the quickest route through the maze.
- Discuss the experience and ask the student what strategies they used to navigate the maze.
First Grade Talking Points

- "When you enter a maze, you have to make choices and decide which path to take."
- "Sometimes you might reach a dead end, which means you have to turn around and try a different path."
- "Mazes can be fun because they challenge our problem-solving skills and make us think."
- "As you navigate through the hay maze, think about different ways you can go and try to find the exit."
- "Remember, there is no right or wrong way to go through a maze. It's all about exploring and having fun!"
