Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a hay maze using only hay bales, and understand the basic concept of mazes.

Materials and Prep

  • Hay bales
  • Open space (backyard or indoor area)
  • Optional: Rope or string

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a clear area where you can set up the hay maze. If you're doing it indoors, ensure there is enough space for the maze to fit comfortably.

Activities

  1. Discuss what a maze is and show examples (books, pictures, online images).
  2. Set up the hay maze by arranging the hay bales in a way that creates a path with dead ends and twists.
  3. Invite the student to navigate through the maze, starting at the entrance and trying to find the exit.
  4. Encourage the student to think strategically and problem solve as they navigate through the maze.
  5. Optional: Use rope or string to create additional obstacles or paths within the maze.
  6. Challenge the student to find the quickest route through the maze.
  7. Discuss the experience and ask the student what strategies they used to navigate the maze.

First Grade Talking Points

  • "A maze is a puzzle or a game where you have to find your way through a series of paths and dead ends."
  • "Some mazes are made of hedges, walls, or even hay bales, like the one we're going to create."
  • "When you enter a maze, you have to make choices and decide which path to take."
  • "Sometimes you might reach a dead end, which means you have to turn around and try a different path."
  • "Mazes can be fun because they challenge our problem-solving skills and make us think."
  • "As you navigate through the hay maze, think about different ways you can go and try to find the exit."
  • "Remember, there is no right or wrong way to go through a maze. It's all about exploring and having fun!"
