Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to analyze and discuss the elements of a YouTube video, including the characters, setting, plot, and main idea.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with internet access
  • Paper and pencils
  • A list of YouTube video suggestions related to reading or storytelling

Activities

  1. Watch a YouTube video together

Choose a YouTube video related to reading or storytelling. Watch it together and pay attention to the characters, setting, and plot. Discuss the main idea or message of the video.

  2. Create a storyboard

Explain what a storyboard is and how it helps organize the plot of a story. Have the student create their own storyboard for a story they would like to tell. They can draw pictures or write short descriptions for each part of the story.

  3. Act out a story

Choose a favorite book or story and have the student act it out. They can assign roles to family members or friends and use props or costumes to bring the story to life.

  4. Record a book review

Have the student choose a book they have recently read and liked. Using a phone or tablet, help them record a book review video, where they share their thoughts and recommendations about the book. Encourage them to use expressive language and explain why they enjoyed the book.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "Characters are the people or animals in a story. They help us understand what happens in the story."
  • "The setting is where and when a story takes place. It helps us imagine where the characters are and what it looks like."
  • "The plot is what happens in the story. It includes the beginning, middle, and end. It's like a road map of the story."
  • "The main idea is the most important message or lesson that the author wants us to learn from the story."
