Materials and Prep

  • Ukulele
  • Blank sheet music or notebook
  • Pencil
  • Internet access (optional, for research purposes)

Prior knowledge of basic ukulele chords and music notation is required.

Activities

  1. Brainstorm Song Ideas: Encourage the student to think about the theme or message they want their song to convey. They can consider personal experiences, emotions, or social issues that inspire them.

  2. Chord Progression Exploration: Have the student experiment with different chord progressions on the ukulele. They can try out different combinations and strumming patterns to create unique sounds.

  3. Lyric Writing: Ask the student to write lyrics that align with the chosen theme or message. They can focus on rhyming, storytelling, or conveying emotions through their words.

  4. Melody Creation: Guide the student in composing a catchy melody that complements the lyrics. They can experiment with different rhythms, scales, and intervals to create an engaging tune.

  5. Structuring the Song: Teach the student about song structure (verse, chorus, bridge, etc.) and help them organize their lyrics and melody into a cohesive arrangement.

  6. Practice and Refinement: Encourage the student to practice playing and singing their composed song. They can make adjustments to chords, lyrics, or melody as needed, aiming for a polished final product.
