Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basic functions and parts of the human body.

Materials and Prep

  • Chart paper or whiteboard
  • Markers or chalk
  • Printed diagrams of the human body

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of body parts and their functions.

Activities

  1. Introduction to the human body

Start by asking the student what they already know about the human body. Write down their responses on the chart paper or whiteboard. Then, introduce the basic functions of the human body, such as breathing, digestion, and movement. Show the printed diagrams of the human body and label the major body parts together.

  2. Body systems matching game

Create flashcards or cut out pictures representing different body systems, such as the circulatory system, respiratory system, and skeletal system. Mix them up and lay them out on the table. Ask the student to match each system with its corresponding function. For example, they should match the heart with the circulatory system. Discuss each system and its role in the body.

  3. Body part identification

Using the printed diagrams of the human body, ask the student to identify and label specific body parts. Start with the major organs and gradually move to more specific parts, such as the brain, lungs, heart, and bones. Encourage the student to explain the function of each body part as they label it.

  4. Body movement demonstration

Engage the student in a physical activity to demonstrate the different ways our body can move. Have them perform actions like walking, running, jumping, and bending. Ask them to identify the body parts involved in each movement and explain how those parts work together.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "Our bodies are amazing machines that perform many functions to keep us alive and healthy."
  • "The human body is made up of different systems, each with its own important job."
  • "The circulatory system helps transport blood and oxygen throughout our body."
  • "The respiratory system allows us to breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide."
  • "Our skeletal system provides support and protection for our organs and helps us move."
  • "The brain is like the control center of our body, sending messages to different parts to make them work."
  • "Our heart is a powerful muscle that pumps blood to deliver oxygen and nutrients to our cells."
  • "Our lungs help us breathe by taking in oxygen and removing waste gases."
  • "Bones give our body structure and protect our organs. They also help us move."
  • "Our body parts work together to allow us to do different movements, like walking, running, and jumping."
