Materials and Prep

  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Sketchbook or plain paper

No prior knowledge or experience is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduction to Character Design

Start by discussing the importance of character design in visual arts and media. Explain how characters can convey emotions, tell stories, and capture the audience's attention. Show examples of well-designed characters from movies, cartoons, or comics to inspire the student.

  2. Brainstorming and Thumbnail Sketching

Guide the student in brainstorming ideas for their original characters. Encourage them to think about the personality, appearance, and backstory of each character. Have them create thumbnail sketches, small rough drawings, to explore different poses, expressions, and variations of their characters.

  3. Refining and Detailing

Once the student has chosen their favorite character concept, instruct them to refine the sketch by adding more details. Teach them techniques for shading, highlighting, and adding texture to bring their character to life.

  4. Critique and Feedback

Encourage the student to share their sketches with you or a peer. Provide constructive feedback on their composition, proportions, and overall design. Discuss ways to improve and suggest additional resources or references for further inspiration.
