Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and solve basic arithmetic problems involving addition and subtraction.
Materials and Prep
- Pen or pencil
- Blank paper
- Calculator (optional)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1 - Addition Practice:
Write down five addition problems on your paper, such as 2 + 3 or 4 + 1. Solve each problem by counting the total number of objects. For example, if the problem is 2 + 3, draw two circles and three more circles, then count how many circles you have in total.
-
Activity 2 - Subtraction Practice:
Write down five subtraction problems on your paper, such as 5 - 2 or 6 - 3. Solve each problem by crossing out the number of objects being subtracted. For example, if the problem is 5 - 2, draw five circles and cross out two of them, then count how many circles are left.
-
Activity 3 - Challenge Yourself:
Create your own addition and subtraction problems and solve them. You can use any numbers you like! Try to make the problems a little more difficult each time to challenge yourself.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to learn about addition and subtraction."
- "Addition is when we combine two or more numbers to find the total. For example, if we have 2 apples and 3 more apples, we can add them together to get 5 apples in total."
- "Subtraction is when we take away or remove some objects from a group. For example, if we have 5 apples and we eat 2 of them, we can subtract 2 from 5 to find out how many apples are left."
- "We can use counting or drawing objects to help us solve addition and subtraction problems."
- "Let's practice addition first. I will give you some problems to solve."
- "Now, let's move on to subtraction. I will give you some problems to solve."
- "Great job! Now, it's time for a challenge. Create your own addition and subtraction problems and solve them."
- "Remember, practice makes perfect! The more we practice, the better we become at solving addition and subtraction problems."
