Fortnite Noun Hunt: Common vs. Proper Nouns!

Hey Victory Royale seeker! Today, we're going on a different kind of hunt – a Noun Hunt! Just like in Fortnite where you find different items, in grammar, we have different types of words called nouns.

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Think about Fortnite: player (person), island (place), weapon (thing).

Common Nouns: Your Basic Loot!

Common nouns are general names for people, places, things, or ideas. They are like the gray guns or basic materials you find everywhere. They don't start with a capital letter unless they begin a sentence.

  • Examples from Fortnite: player, island, weapon, glider, storm, character, town, emote

Proper Nouns: Your Legendary Loot!

Proper nouns are specific names for particular people, places, things, or organizations. They are like finding a Legendary Scar or meeting a specific character! Proper nouns ALWAYS start with a capital letter.

  • Examples from Fortnite: Peely (specific character), Tilted Towers (specific place), Battle Bus (specific thing/vehicle), Epic Games (specific organization), The Island (specific name of the place)

Spot the Difference!

See how 'island' is general (common), but 'The Island' (the specific name of the Fortnite map) is specific (proper)? See how 'character' is common, but 'Meowscles' is proper?

Activity 1: Sorting the Loot

Let's sort these Fortnite words. On your paper, make two columns: 'Common Nouns' and 'Proper Nouns'. Write each word below in the correct column. Remember capitalization!

  • pleasant park
  • pickaxe
  • bushranger
  • map
  • slurp juice
  • reality falls
  • player
  • fortnite
  • loot lake
  • shield potion

(Check your answers below after you try!)

Activity 2: Build-a-Sentence Battle Royale!

Now, write three sentences about Fortnite. Each sentence must have at least one common noun and one proper noun. Underline the common nouns once and the proper nouns twice. Make sure your proper nouns start with capital letters!

  1. Example: Peely drank a shield potion near Tilted Towers.
  2. Your turn!
  3. Your turn!
  4. Your turn!

Mission Accomplished!

Great job, grammar expert! You've learned to spot common nouns (general) and proper nouns (specific) and know that proper nouns always get a capital letter, just like a Victory Royale deserves celebration! Keep practicing spotting them when you read or talk about Fortnite!

Answer Key for Activity 1:
