Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the connection between painting and language arts by creating a story based on a painting.
Materials and Prep
- Painting supplies (paints, brushes, canvas or paper)
- Storytelling materials (paper, pencils, markers)
- A painting of your choice (can be a famous artwork or a personal creation)
Before starting the lesson, familiarize yourself with the painting you have chosen and think of a few possible story ideas that can be derived from it.
Activities
- Observe the painting and discuss its elements, such as colors, shapes, and subjects. Talk about the emotions or stories that the painting may evoke.
- Brainstorm different story ideas that could be connected to the painting. Encourage creativity and imagination.
- Choose one story idea and begin writing a short story based on the painting. Include descriptive language and vivid details.
- Once the story is written, create an illustration that represents a scene from the story. Use painting supplies to bring the story to life visually.
- Share your story and painting with others. Discuss the connections between the painting, the story, and the emotions they evoke.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Paintings are like pictures that artists create using colors, shapes, and lines."
- "Sometimes, paintings can tell stories or show emotions without using any words."
- "When we look at a painting, we can imagine different stories that could be happening in the picture."
- "Today, we will choose a painting and create our own story based on it."
- "We will use our language arts skills to write the story and our painting skills to create an illustration."
- "Once we are finished, we will share our story and painting with others and talk about how they make us feel."
