Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of the skeletal system and identify the major bones in the human body.
Materials and Prep
- Anatomy poster or diagram of the human skeletal system
- Paper and pencils for drawing
- Access to a computer or tablet for online research (optional)
Activities
- Start by discussing the importance of the skeletal system in our bodies. Talk about how it provides support, protects our organs, and helps us move.
- Show the anatomy poster or diagram of the skeletal system and explain the different parts, such as bones, joints, and the spine. Point out major bones like the skull, ribcage, spine, arms, and legs.
- Give the student a piece of paper and ask them to draw a simple outline of a human body. Encourage them to label the major bones they just learned about.
- If available, allow the student to use a computer or tablet to do some online research on the skeletal system. They can find interesting facts or additional bones to add to their drawing.
- Once the drawings are complete, have the student share their artwork and explain the different bones they included. Encourage questions and discussions about the skeletal system.
Third Grade Talking Points
- "Our bodies have a special system called the skeletal system."
- "The skeletal system is made up of bones, joints, and the spine."
- "Bones are hard and strong, and they give our bodies shape and support."
- "Some major bones in our bodies include the skull, ribcage, spine, arms, and legs."
- "The skeletal system helps protect our organs, like the heart and lungs, by surrounding them with bones."
- "We can move because our bones are connected by joints, which act like hinges."
- "The spine is a long row of bones that runs down our back and helps us stand up straight."
- "Our arms and legs have different bones that allow us to reach, grasp, and walk."
- "Drawing and labeling the bones can help us remember and understand the skeletal system better."
