Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the connection between space and environmental science, and how space exploration impacts our environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Pen and paper
  • Computer with internet access
  • Access to space-related websites or articles

No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Research and Presentation: Choose a space mission (e.g., Apollo, Mars Rover, International Space Station) and investigate how it has contributed to our understanding of the environment. Create a presentation highlighting the mission's findings and environmental impact. Include visuals and key points to share with the class.

  2. Debate: Divide into two groups and debate the following topic: "Is space exploration worth the environmental impact it creates?" One group argues in favor of space exploration, highlighting its scientific and technological advancements, while the other group argues against it, emphasizing the potential harm to the environment. Prepare your arguments and counterarguments, and engage in a respectful debate.

  3. Environmental Solutions: Brainstorm and write a list of potential environmental challenges that humans may face in space exploration, such as waste management, resource depletion, and habitat preservation. Then, propose innovative solutions to these challenges, considering sustainable practices and technologies.

Eighth Grade Talking Points

  • "Space exploration has allowed us to study Earth from a different perspective. Satellites and space missions provide valuable data on climate change, deforestation, and pollution."

  • "Space technology helps us monitor natural disasters, such as hurricanes and wildfires, enabling faster response and better disaster management."

  • "Space missions have advanced our understanding of the solar system and beyond, providing insights into the possibility of extraterrestrial life and the potential for human colonization."

  • "However, space exploration also has environmental impacts. Rocket launches release greenhouse gases and contribute to air pollution. Space debris poses a threat to both satellites and astronauts."

  • "Scientists and engineers are working on developing cleaner and more sustainable space propulsion systems, as well as methods to mitigate space debris through active debris removal and better waste management."
