Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand basic concepts related to Earth Science through the exploration of apples.

Materials and Prep

  • Apples (at least one per student)
  • Knife (to cut the apples if needed)
  • Plate or cutting board
  • Paper towels
  • Optional: magnifying glass

Activities

  1. Introduction: Begin by showing the apples to the student and asking what they know or think about apples. Encourage them to share their thoughts and observations.
  2. Observation: Have the student examine the apple using their senses. Ask them to describe the color, shape, texture, and smell of the apple.
  3. Cutting the Apple: With adult supervision, cut the apple in half and ask the student to observe the inside of the apple. Point out the different parts such as the skin, flesh, and core.
  4. Seed Exploration: Show the seeds to the student and discuss their purpose in the apple's life cycle. You can also use a magnifying glass to examine the seeds more closely if available.
  5. Apple Tasting: Allow the student to taste the apple and discuss the flavors and textures they experience. Encourage them to describe the taste using words like sweet, sour, juicy, or crunchy.
  6. Wrap-up: Recap the lesson by asking the student to share their favorite thing they learned about apples or any questions they still have.
