Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand some basic concepts of chemistry related to Halloween.
Materials and Prep
- Plastic cups
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Food coloring (optional)
- Measuring spoons
- Small bowl
- Plastic Halloween-themed toys or decorations
- Water
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Make spooky fizzing potions:
- Fill a plastic cup halfway with vinegar.
- Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
- In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with a little water to create a paste.
- Drop the paste into the vinegar and watch it fizz and bubble like a potion!
- Repeat with different colors and experiment with different amounts of baking soda for varying reactions.
-
Create a Halloween volcano:
- Place a plastic cup in the center of a larger container or tray.
- Add a small Halloween-themed toy or decoration inside the cup.
- Pour vinegar into the cup until it is about halfway full.
- Add a few drops of food coloring if desired.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the vinegar and watch the "volcano" erupt!
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Today, we are going to have fun with chemistry and learn some cool things about Halloween!"
- "Chemistry is the science of how things are made and what happens when different things mix together."
- "We will be using vinegar and baking soda to create reactions that fizz and bubble like potions and erupt like volcanoes!"
- "We can add food coloring to make our potions and volcanoes look even more spooky."
- "Remember, always ask an adult for help when doing experiments."
- "Let's get started and have a spooktacular time learning about chemistry!"
