Level Up Your Reading: Exploring Worlds and Characters
Engage (10 mins)
Start with a chat: What's your favorite world to explore in Minecraft or Roblox? What makes a character in Fortnite or Call of Duty cool or memorable? What's the most exciting part about a dirt bike track? Listen for descriptive words they use. Explain that today, we're going to look at how writers and game creators use words to build these awesome characters and places, just like building with blocks in Minecraft!
Explore & Explain (20 mins)
Introduce Concepts: Explain 'character traits' (what a character is like - brave, sneaky, creative) and 'setting' (where and when the story happens). Discuss how descriptive words (adjectives, vivid verbs) help us picture these things.
Model Analysis: Choose a short text excerpt (e.g., describing a Minecraft biome like the Nether, or a Fortnite character's appearance). Read it aloud. Think aloud as you identify words that describe the place ('fiery', 'dangerous', 'vast') or the character ('colorful', 'equipped', 'mysterious'). Ask: How do these words make you feel about this place/character? What do they tell us about it?
Guided Practice (15 mins)
Read another short excerpt together (e.g., a description of a popular Roblox game world, a Call of Duty mission setting, or a paragraph about a challenging dirt bike trail). Ask the student to find descriptive words with you. Use highlighters if available. Discuss: What kind of place is this? What would it be like to be there? If it describes a character, what kind of person do they seem to be?
Independent Practice (15 mins)
Offer a choice of 2-3 different short reading passages related to their interests (ensure variety). Ask the student to read one independently and then write down:
- 3-5 words or phrases that describe the setting.
- 3-5 words or phrases that describe the main character (if applicable).
- One word to describe the mood or feeling of the setting (e.g., exciting, creepy, adventurous).
- One character trait they can guess based on the description and why.
Share & Reflect (10 mins)
Have the student share their findings from the independent practice. Discuss their answers. Ask questions like: How did the author make the setting sound exciting/dangerous/etc.? What words were most powerful in describing the character? How does paying attention to these details make reading (or even playing the game/imagining riding) more interesting?
Extension (Optional)
Challenge the student to write their own short paragraph describing:
- A new character skin for Fortnite.
- A custom world they'd build in Minecraft or Roblox.
- Their dream dirt bike track.
Encourage them to use strong descriptive words.
