Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills in a fun baking activity.
Materials and Prep
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Mixing bowls
- Baking ingredients (flour, sugar, butter, etc.)
- Oven or stovetop
- Baking pans or molds
- Recipe for a simple baked good (e.g., cookies)
Prior to the lesson, make sure you have all the materials ready and familiarize yourself with the recipe.
Activities
-
Introduce the concept of measurement by discussing different units of measurement (cups, teaspoons, etc.). Show the student the measuring cups and spoons and explain their uses.
-
Read through the recipe together and identify the ingredients and their quantities. Ask the student to help you measure the ingredients according to the recipe.
-
Guide the student in following the recipe instructions to mix the ingredients and prepare the batter or dough.
-
Discuss the concept of temperature by explaining how the oven or stovetop works. Set the appropriate temperature and explain the importance of preheating.
-
Assist the student in putting the batter or dough into the baking pans or molds. Discuss the concept of shape and size as they choose the appropriate pan or mold.
-
Place the pans or molds in the oven or on the stovetop and explain the concept of time. Set a timer for the recommended baking duration.
-
Once the baked goods are ready, allow them to cool and discuss the concept of temperature again. Explain how hot items need time to cool down before they can be safely handled.
-
Finally, enjoy the delicious baked goods together and celebrate the successful application of arithmetic skills in baking!
First Grade Talking Points
- "We use measuring cups and spoons to measure ingredients accurately."
- "Different recipes require different amounts of ingredients."
- "The oven or stovetop gets hot and cooks our food."
- "We need to wait for our baked goods to cool before eating them."
- "Baking is a fun way to practice math skills like measuring and following instructions!"
