Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes using building blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Building blocks of various shapes (such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles)
No additional preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Introduction: Begin by showing the student different building blocks and discussing their shapes. Ask them to identify the shapes they recognize.
- Sorting Shapes: Have the student sort the building blocks into different groups based on their shapes. Encourage them to describe the shapes as they sort.
- Building with Shapes: Ask the student to use the building blocks to create simple structures using specific shapes. For example, ask them to build a tower using only square blocks.
- Shape Hunt: Hide different building blocks around the room and ask the student to find specific shapes. For example, ask them to find a triangle block or a circle block.
- Shape Art: Provide the student with paper and crayons. Ask them to use the building blocks as stamps to create artwork with different shapes.
Kindergarten Grade Talking Points
- "Shapes are all around us! We see them in buildings, objects, and even in our toys like building blocks."
- "Some shapes have straight sides and some have curved sides. Can you find a shape with straight sides? How about a shape with curved sides?"
- "Let's sort these building blocks based on their shapes. Can you put all the square blocks together? Great job!"
- "Now, let's use the building blocks to build something. Can you make a tower using only triangle blocks? Wonderful!"
- "I've hidden some building blocks around the room. Can you find a rectangle block? Fantastic! Now, can you find a circle block?"
- "You can also create art using shapes! Let's use the building blocks as stamps to make beautiful artwork. What shape do you want to use first?"
