Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and describe basic geometric shapes found in building blocks.
Materials and Prep
- Building blocks (various shapes and colors)
- Large sheet of paper or whiteboard
- Markers or crayons
Before starting the lesson, make sure the building blocks are easily accessible and organized.
Activities
- Introduction: Show the building blocks to the student and discuss their different shapes and colors. Ask the student if they can name any of the shapes they see.
- Shape Hunt: Give the student a specific shape to find within the building blocks. For example, ask them to find a square block or a cylinder block. Encourage them to describe the shape using its properties (e.g., "A square has four equal sides and four corners").
- Shape Sorting: Have the student sort the building blocks into different groups based on their shapes. They can create separate piles for squares, circles, triangles, etc. Discuss the characteristics of each shape as they sort.
- Shape Drawing: On the large sheet of paper or whiteboard, draw different shapes and ask the student to identify them. Then, have the student try to draw the shapes themselves.
- Building Challenge: Challenge the student to use the building blocks to create a specific shape. For example, ask them to build a rectangle or a pyramid. Discuss the properties of the shape as they construct it.
First Grade Talking Points
- "Shapes are all around us, even in our building blocks."
- "A square has four equal sides and four corners. Can you find a square block?"
- "A circle is round and doesn't have any corners. Can you find a circular block?"
- "A triangle has three sides and three corners. Can you find a triangular block?"
- "When we sort the blocks by shape, we can see how many of each shape we have."
- "Drawing shapes helps us practice recognizing and identifying them."
- "Building different shapes with the blocks helps us understand their properties."
