Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the connection between dance and history, and appreciate how dance has evolved over time.
Materials and Prep
- No materials are needed for this lesson.
- Prior knowledge of basic dance movements and an interest in history would be helpful.
Activities
Research and Presentation: Choose a historical period or event that you find interesting. Research how dance was performed during that time and create a short presentation showcasing the dance style and its significance in that period. You can use drawings, diagrams, or even perform a short dance routine to demonstrate the style.
Create a Dance Timeline: Using a large piece of paper or poster board, create a timeline of different dance styles throughout history. Include the name of the dance style, the time period it originated from, and a brief description or illustration of the dance. Hang it up in your homeschool space to refer to and add to later.
Interview an Elder: If possible, interview an older family member or friend who has witnessed dance styles change over time. Ask them about their memories of popular dances from their youth and how they have seen dance evolve. Take notes or record the conversation to refer back to later.
