Objective

By the end of this lesson, the first grade homeschool student will be able to identify and appreciate the art and culture of ancient Egypt.

Materials and Prep

  • Drawing paper
  • Colored pencils or crayons
  • Pencil
  • Internet access (optional)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Introduce Egypt: Show the student pictures or videos of ancient Egyptian art and artifacts. Discuss the significance of art in ancient Egyptian culture.
  2. Drawing Egyptian Symbols: Teach the student about some common symbols used in ancient Egyptian art, such as the Eye of Horus or the Ankh. Have the student choose one symbol to draw on their paper.
  3. Coloring and Decorating: After drawing the symbol, encourage the student to color and decorate it using vibrant colors, just like the ancient Egyptians did. They can also add additional elements to their artwork if they wish.
  4. Display and Discuss: Once the artwork is complete, have the student share their drawing with you. Ask them to explain what the symbol represents and why they chose it. Discuss the importance of symbols in ancient Egyptian art and culture.
