Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and discuss key elements of a Halloween-themed story.

Materials and Prep

  • Halloween-themed storybook
  • Pen or pencil
  • Blank paper or notebook

Activities

  1. Read a Halloween-themed story together with your parent or guardian.

    While reading, pay attention to the characters, setting, and events in the story.

  2. After reading, discuss the story with your parent or guardian. Talk about your favorite parts, the characters you liked, and what you learned from the story.

  3. Using the blank paper or notebook, draw a picture of your favorite scene from the story.

    Write a sentence or two describing the scene and why you liked it.

  4. Share your drawing and description with your parent or guardian.

    Explain why you chose that particular scene and what made it special to you.

Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to read a special story about Halloween. Halloween is a holiday where people dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating."
  • "When we read the story, pay attention to the characters. Characters are the people or animals in a story. Who do you think will be in our Halloween story?"
  • "We will also learn about the setting of the story. The setting is where and when the story takes place. Do you think the story will happen in a spooky haunted house or a bright pumpkin patch?"
  • "After we finish reading, we will talk about our favorite parts. What do you think will be your favorite part of the story?"
  • "Let's use our creativity to draw a picture of our favorite scene from the story. You can use colors and shapes to make it look special. Don't forget to write a sentence or two describing the scene!"
  • "Lastly, we will share our drawings and descriptions with each other. It will be fun to see what everyone liked about the story and why."
