Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to create a simple circuit using everyday materials and understand the basic principles of electricity.

Materials and Prep

  • 1 D battery
  • 1 battery holder
  • 2 alligator clips
  • 1 light bulb
  • Assorted wires
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Paper and pencil for taking notes
  • Make sure to have a safe and clean workspace

Activities

  1. Introduction to Electricity

Start by discussing what electricity is and its importance in our daily lives. Talk about different sources of electricity and how it is used in various devices.

  2. Building a Simple Circuit

Guide the student in building a simple circuit using the materials provided. Show them how to connect the battery holder, battery, wires, and light bulb to create a complete circuit. Explain the concept of closed and open circuits.

  3. Experimenting with Circuit Components

Encourage the student to explore different ways of modifying the circuit. They can try adding additional light bulbs, switches, or other components to see how it affects the flow of electricity.

  4. Recording Observations

Have the student record their observations and findings in a notebook. They should note down any changes they made to the circuit and how it affected the flow of electricity.

  5. Discussion and Reflection

Engage in a discussion with the student about their observations and what they learned from the activity. Ask them to reflect on the importance of circuits in our everyday lives and how they are used in STEM fields.

Sixth Grade Talking Points

  • "Electricity is a form of energy that powers many devices we use."
  • "A circuit is a closed loop through which electricity can flow."
  • "A complete circuit requires a power source, conductive materials, and a load."
  • "The flow of electricity can be controlled using switches."
  • "Circuits are used in various STEM fields, such as robotics, engineering, and computer science."
