Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply basic arithmetic skills in a fun and engaging way while playing Dungeons and Dragons.

Materials and Prep

  • Dungeons and Dragons game set
  • Paper and pencil
  • Calculator (optional)

No prior knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons is required, as we will be learning the basic rules together.

Activities

  1. Create a character: Help your student create a character for the game by assigning values to different attributes such as strength, intelligence, and dexterity. Discuss how these attributes can be represented by numbers.
  2. Rolling the dice: Introduce the different types of dice used in the game and their corresponding numbers (e.g., a 6-sided die, or a d6, has numbers 1-6). Practice rolling the dice and adding or subtracting the numbers rolled.
  3. Battle calculations: During battles in the game, players need to calculate damage dealt and remaining health points. Guide your student through these calculations, reinforcing addition and subtraction skills.
  4. Buying and selling items: In the game, players can buy and sell items using gold coins. Create simple scenarios where your student needs to calculate the total cost of items or calculate the change received after a purchase.

Second Grade Talking Points

  • "In Dungeons and Dragons, we get to create our own characters and go on exciting adventures."
  • "We use numbers to represent different attributes of our characters, like how strong they are or how smart they are."
  • "When we roll the dice, we add or subtract the numbers to see what happens in the game."
  • "During battles, we need to calculate how much damage our character deals and how much health the enemy has left."
  • "We can use our math skills to figure out how much items cost and how much change we should get."
