Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to add and subtract numbers within 10 with confidence.

Materials and Prep

  • Counters or small objects (e.g., buttons, beads)
  • Number flashcards (0-10)
  • Whiteboard or paper and markers

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Counting and Addition

Start by showing the number flashcards to the student one by one, from 0 to 10. Encourage them to count along with you. Then, pick two numbers and ask the student to use the counters or small objects to physically represent the numbers. For example, if you pick 3 and 4, the student should place three counters and four counters separately. Then, ask them to count all the counters together and tell you the sum. Repeat this activity with different number combinations.

  2. Activity 2: Subtraction with Number Line

Create a number line on the whiteboard or paper, starting from 0 and ending at 10. Explain to the student that subtraction means taking away or removing some objects. Pick a number from 1 to 10 and ask the student to place that many counters on the number line, starting from 0. Then, choose a smaller number and ask the student to remove that many counters from the number line. Encourage them to count the remaining counters and tell you the difference. Repeat this activity with different number combinations.

Transitional-Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Adding means putting numbers together. For example, if we have 2 apples and add 3 more apples, we would have 5 apples in total."
  • "Subtracting means taking away or removing some numbers. If we have 5 balloons and take away 2 balloons, we would be left with 3 balloons."
  • "When we add or subtract, we can use counters or small objects to help us visualize the numbers and make it easier to understand."
  • "A number line is a helpful tool for subtraction. It helps us see the order of numbers and how they relate to each other."
  • "Remember, when we add, the number gets bigger, and when we subtract, the number gets smaller."
