Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to write a creative Halloween story using descriptive language and proper sentence structure.
Materials and Prep
- Blank paper
- Pencils or pens
- Coloring materials (optional)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Brainstorming: Start by asking the student to think about what they enjoy most about Halloween. Encourage them to come up with a list of Halloween-related words or phrases, such as costumes, pumpkins, ghosts, or trick-or-treating.
- Descriptive Writing: Instruct the student to choose one word or phrase from their brainstorming list and write a descriptive sentence about it. For example, if they choose "pumpkins," they could write, "The round, orange pumpkins were as big as my head."
- Expanding Sentences: Next, ask the student to expand their descriptive sentence into a full paragraph. They should add more details and use descriptive language to make their writing more interesting. Encourage them to use their imagination and think about how the chosen word or phrase relates to Halloween.
- Illustration: If desired, the student can now draw a picture to accompany their paragraph. This will help them visualize their story and make it even more engaging.
- Sharing and Editing: Finally, have the student share their paragraph and illustration with you or a family member. Encourage them to read it aloud and make any necessary edits or improvements based on feedback received.
