Materials and Prep
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Magazines or newspapers
- Markers or crayons
Before starting the lesson, make sure you have all the materials ready and a clean workspace to work on.
Activities
- Begin by discussing different types of art and what a collage is. Show examples of collages from books or the internet.
- Give each student a sheet of construction paper as their base for the collage.
- Ask the students to cut out various shapes and images from the magazines or newspapers. Encourage them to choose different colors and textures.
- Once they have a collection of cutouts, instruct them to arrange and glue the pieces onto their construction paper in a way that creates an interesting composition.
- After the glue has dried, students can use markers or crayons to add details or draw additional elements to their collage.
- Display the finished collages and have a class discussion about the different choices each student made and what they like about their artwork.
