Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a musical instrument using Lego bricks and understand the basic concepts of pitch and rhythm.
Materials and Prep
- Lego bricks
- Optional: Lego Technic pieces for more advanced designs
- Printed or drawn music notes (quarter notes, half notes, etc.)
- Pencil
Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of Lego building and ability to follow simple instructions.
Activities
- Introduce the concept of pitch by explaining that different musical notes have different pitches. Show examples of high and low pitches using your voice or a musical instrument if available.
- Discuss rhythm and explain that it refers to the duration of musical notes. Show examples of long and short notes using clapping or tapping on a table.
- Have the student choose a Lego brick and instruct them to build a simple musical instrument, such as a shaker or a drum, using the Lego bricks. Encourage creativity and experimentation.
- Once the instrument is built, show the student the printed or drawn music notes and explain their durations. Ask the student to place the notes on their Lego instrument, representing the rhythm they want to create.
- Encourage the student to experiment with different combinations of notes and play their Lego instrument to create unique rhythms.
- Conclude the lesson by having the student share their creation and perform their rhythm for you or other family members.

- "We can represent different rhythms by placing music notes on our Lego instruments."
- "By experimenting with different notes and rhythms, we can create our own unique music."
- "Let's share our creations and perform our rhythms for others to enjoy!"
