Objective
By the end of this lesson, the preschool student will be able to identify and say basic words related to princesses and unicorns in Mandarin Chinese.
Materials and Prep
- Flashcards with pictures of princesses and unicorns
- Whiteboard or large paper and markers
- Device with internet access (optional)
No prior knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Show the flashcards of princesses and unicorns to the student. Point to each picture and say the corresponding Mandarin Chinese word. Have the student repeat the words after you.
- Draw a simple princess and unicorn on the whiteboard or paper. Label each drawing with the Mandarin Chinese word. Encourage the student to try drawing their own princess and unicorn, and label them in Mandarin Chinese as well.
- If you have access to the internet, search for videos or songs in Mandarin Chinese that feature princesses and unicorns. Watch and listen together, repeating any words or phrases that are introduced.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "A princess is a special girl who lives in a big castle and wears beautiful dresses like this one." (Show a picture of a princess)
- "A unicorn is a magical creature that looks like a horse with a horn on its head. It's very special and can do special things." (Show a picture of a unicorn)
- "In Mandarin Chinese, we say 'gongzhu' for princess and 'xiniu' for unicorn. Can you say those words?"
- "Now let's draw a princess and a unicorn together. Remember to label them with their Mandarin Chinese names!"
- "If you want to say 'hello' in Mandarin Chinese, you can say 'ni hao'. Try saying it with me!"
- "To say 'thank you' in Mandarin Chinese, you can say 'xie xie'. Can you say that?"
