Objective
By the end of this lesson, the toddler will be able to explore and learn about basic concepts in Earth Science through outdoor activities.
Materials and Prep
- A small magnifying glass
- A small bucket or container
- A notebook or journal
- A pencil or crayon
- A comfortable outdoor space
- Sunscreen and a hat for sun protection
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Take a Nature Walk: Go for a walk in a nearby park or garden. Encourage the toddler to observe and point out different things they see in nature, such as trees, flowers, insects, and birds. Use the magnifying glass to examine small objects up close.
- Collect Natural Objects: During the nature walk, have the toddler collect interesting objects they find on the ground, such as leaves, rocks, or flowers. Place these objects in the bucket or container.
- Create a Nature Journal: Sit down with the toddler in a comfortable outdoor space. Provide them with the notebook or journal and the pencil or crayon. Encourage them to draw or scribble about their nature walk and the objects they collected.
- Discuss Seasons: Talk to the toddler about the different seasons and how they affect nature. For example, explain how flowers bloom in spring, leaves change color in autumn, and snow falls in winter.
