Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand basic arithmetic concepts while engaging in a fun ice cream making activity.

Materials and Prep

  • Ice cream ingredients (milk, sugar, vanilla extract)
  • Ice cream maker or a mixing bowl and spoon
  • Ice cubes and salt (if using an ice cream maker)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ice cream cones or bowls
  • Toppings (sprinkles, chocolate syrup, etc.)
  • Apron or old clothes to protect from spills
  • A clear workspace

Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of counting and numbers.

Activities

  1. Mixing Ingredients: Guide the student in measuring and mixing the ice cream ingredients in a bowl. Encourage them to count the number of cups or spoons they add to the mixture.
  2. Churning the Ice Cream: If using an ice cream maker, explain the process of adding ice and salt to the machine and turning it on. Alternatively, if using a mixing bowl and spoon, guide the student in stirring the mixture vigorously until it thickens.
  3. Serving and Topping: Once the ice cream is ready, assist the student in scooping it into ice cream cones or bowls. Encourage them to choose their favorite toppings and discuss the quantity of each topping they want to add.
  4. Enjoying the Ice Cream: Sit together with the student and enjoy the ice cream they made. Use this time to reinforce the concepts of counting and numbers by asking questions like, "How many scoops of ice cream do you have?", "How many toppings did you add?", etc.
