Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to recognize and understand the different seasons and their characteristics, while practicing basic arithmetic skills.
Materials and Prep
- Seasonal pictures or drawings (one for each season)
- Counting objects (e.g. buttons, beads, or small toys)
- Blank paper and crayons/markers
- Scissors (with adult supervision)
Activities
- Introduction: Show the seasonal pictures or drawings to the student and discuss the characteristics of each season. Ask them to name the seasons and identify what they know about each one.
- Counting Seasons: Using the counting objects, ask the student to count how many objects are related to each season. For example, how many suns for summer, how many leaves for autumn, etc. This will reinforce counting skills while connecting them to the seasons.
- Seasonal Drawings: Provide the student with blank paper and crayons/markers. Ask them to draw their favorite things about each season. Encourage them to use their imagination and creativity.
- Seasonal Sorting: Cut out pictures or drawings representing different elements of each season (e.g. snowflakes, flowers, raindrops, etc.). Ask the student to sort the pictures into the correct season. This will help them recognize and categorize seasonal items.
Preschool Grade Talking Points
- "Seasons are different times of the year that have different weather and things around us."
- "Summer is when it's hot and we can go swimming and play outside."
- "Autumn is when the leaves change colors and fall from the trees."
- "Winter is when it's cold and we might see snow and build snowmen."
- "Spring is when flowers bloom and everything becomes green again."
- "Let's count how many things we can find for each season. How many suns do you see for summer?"
- "Can you draw your favorite things about each season? What colors do you think of for each season?"
- "Now let's sort these pictures into the correct season. Where do snowflakes belong? Winter or summer?"
