Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to identify and use verbs and adjectives to describe the changing seasons.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil
  • Coloring materials
  • Access to a window or outdoor space to observe the changing seasons

Activities

  1. Start by discussing the concept of changing seasons with the student. Ask them to share their observations about the different seasons and how they are different from one another.

  2. Take the student to a window or outdoor space where they can observe the current season. Encourage them to use their senses to describe what they see, hear, smell, and feel.

  3. Ask the student to write down at least five verbs and five adjectives that they associate with the current season. For example, if it's winter, they may write "snowing," "cold," "cozy," "skiing," and "hot chocolate."

  4. Have the student share their lists and discuss why they chose those particular words. Help them understand the difference between verbs (action words) and adjectives (describing words).

  5. Give the student a blank sheet of paper and ask them to draw a picture that represents the current season. Encourage them to use their chosen verbs and adjectives to add details to their artwork.

  6. Once the drawing is complete, have the student write a short paragraph describing the season using the verbs and adjectives they have chosen.

  7. Review the student's paragraph together, making sure they have used the verbs and adjectives correctly. Provide feedback and guidance as needed.

Third Grade Talking Points

  • "In Language Arts, we can use verbs to show action. Can you think of some verbs that describe what happens during different seasons?"
  • "Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about something. Can you think of some adjectives that describe the weather or things we see in different seasons?"
  • "When we observe the changing seasons, we can use our senses to gather information. What are some things we can see, hear, smell, or feel during different seasons?"
  • "By writing down verbs and adjectives that we associate with a particular season, we can create a vivid picture in our minds and communicate our experiences to others."
  • "Drawing a picture and writing a paragraph using the verbs and adjectives we have chosen helps us express our thoughts and feelings about the current season."
  • "Remember to review your work and make sure you have used the verbs and adjectives correctly. This will help others understand your descriptions better."
