Objective

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a garden or outdoor space with plants and trees
  • Prior knowledge of basic plant anatomy and photosynthesis

Activities

  1. Observing and Measuring

    Go to a garden or outdoor space with plants and trees. Choose a few different plants and trees to observe. Take note of their height, leaf size, and any other observable characteristics. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure the height of the plants. Record your observations and measurements in your notebook.

  2. Investigating Leaf Motion

    Select a leaf from a plant or tree, preferably one with a long petiole (leaf stalk). Hold the leaf by the petiole and gently swing it back and forth. Observe the motion of the leaf. Does it swing freely or does it resist motion? Try this with leaves of different sizes and shapes. Record your observations and any patterns you notice.

  3. Exploring Photosynthesis

    Choose a leaf from a plant and place it in a clear plastic bag. Seal the bag, ensuring it is airtight. Leave the bag in direct sunlight for a few hours. After some time, carefully remove the leaf from the bag and observe any changes. What do you think happened to the leaf? Write down your observations and explanations.
