Objective

By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand and appreciate the art of painting, and create their own simple painting using basic techniques.

Materials and Prep

  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • Water container
  • Watercolor paper or thick white paper
  • Palette or plastic plates
  • Apron or old clothes to protect from paint stains
  • Newspapers or tablecloth to cover the working area

Before starting the lesson, make sure to cover the working area with newspapers or a tablecloth to prevent any mess. Also, prepare the watercolor paints, brushes, and paper for the student.

Activities

  • Introduction to Painting: Show the student different paintings and discuss the colors, shapes, and lines they can see. Ask them what they like about the paintings and encourage them to express their thoughts.
  • Color Exploration: Give the student a palette with different watercolor paints and ask them to experiment with mixing colors. Let them explore how different colors can be created by combining primary colors.
  • Painting Techniques: Demonstrate basic painting techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brush. Show the student how to load the brush with paint and apply it to the paper using different strokes.
  • Create a Painting: Let the student choose a subject (e.g., a flower, a tree, an animal) and encourage them to paint it using the techniques they learned. Provide guidance and support as needed.
  • Art Appreciation: Display the student's finished painting and discuss what they like about it. Ask open-ended questions to encourage their critical thinking and appreciation of their own artwork.

Kindergarten Grade Talking Points

  • "Painting is a special kind of art where we use colors and brushes to create pictures."
  • "We can mix different colors together to make new colors. For example, when we mix red and yellow, we get orange."
  • "There are different ways to paint. We can paint with wet brushes on wet paper, or we can paint with dry brushes on dry paper."
  • "When we paint, we can make different lines and shapes. We can paint straight lines, wavy lines, or even zigzag lines."
  • "When we finish our painting, we can look at it and think about what we like about it. We can use our imagination and creativity to make beautiful art!"
